Quality data is important because any information in a patient’s chart holds a purpose. Health care providers review, analysis, and compare to similar cases to provide a better judgment and decision of treatment. But data within a patient’s record must be accurate. It is important for data to be accurate, if data is not accurate then decisions or judgment cannot be effective or even can cause more harm. For example, a 77 year old male enters the emergency room feeling weak and fatigue. The physician orders for blood to drawn and sent to the laboratory. At the time of the blood draw, the blood samples were mislabeled and the wrong diagnostic tests were done. The results showed the patient’s hemoglobin is low. The physician sees the results and feels the patient needs a blood transfusion to correct those levels. He orders the blood transfusion and another blood draw to determine if the transfusion was effective. The patient receives the blood transfusion and another blood draw was done. The results showed the patient’s hemoglobin is now really high.

Because the wrong diagnostic tests were done on the blood, it gave inaccurate results. Then the physician treated the patient based on those results, a treatment that was not needed. Now they are back at square one with trying to find the right diagnoses for the patient so the right treatment can be given.
